Henry Ford Antiques:

Large Sleigh made by James Kingsbury, Albany, NY with carved Swan motif

Info as follows:

James Kingsbury was born in Ireland 1820-21.  He came to USA in 1834.  He died at his son Robert’s home Jan 03, 1901 at 250 Pennington St, Passaic New Jersey and he was brought back to Albany for burial.

James Kingsbury  was listed in the following US Federal & NY State Census’ at Albany as a “Coach Maker and/or Coach Manufacturer”.

1850: “Coach Maker”
1855: “Coach Maker”

1860: “Coach Maker”

1865: “Coach Maker” (NY state census at Albany)

1870: “Carriage Manufacturer”

1875: “Carriage Maker” (NY state census at Albany)

1880: “Carriage Maker”

1890: No US Federal Census survives

1895: Now retired, living at sons’ home in Passaic New Jersey.

1900: Still living at son Robert Kingsbury home, in Passaic New Jersey

1901: January 03, Died at his sons home in Passaic New Jersey, buried in Albany, NY.

In reviewing the 1886 Bi-Centennial History of Albany, found that in 1854 James Kingsbury began this business  with both Jeremiah and Stephen Whitehead and it was known as “Kingsbury, Whitehead & Whitehead”.  Later,  Stephen Whitehead dropped out of this partnership, and it then became known as  “Kingsbury & Whitehead” and they were located at 131 & 133 Hudson Ave, Albany NY.

In 1874 James Kingsbury bought out his partner Jeremiah Whitehead and began conducting the business alone until February 1876 when the present proprietor John Kingsbury bought the grounds and  building.  I believe James still stayed on building carriages, sleigh, cutters and hearses.   John Kingsbury died 1909 at Albany, and was either a son, brother or cousin – have not yet researched that relationship.

So this sleigh with only the names of James alone, as seen written upon from your photos, it, could have been manufactured for James personal use,  and/or made by James as the then sole owner of this company, between the years 1874-1876 – hence only his name and not of any partners “Whitehead”.

So long story short, whomever purchases this fabulous sleigh, to note that the sleigh exterior was crafted as a Peacock (my opinion) or Swan (another’s opinion), with the wings extending towards the rear. Note the head of the iron piece at front of sleigh!  Awesome sleigh for whomever purchases it, and hopefully would restore it to its early splendor!

(info provided by one of our wonderful auction customers!)
