The first Mercury dimes were released in October 1916 and were well-received by the public. However, some modifications were needed to make the coin compatible with vending machines.

Two 1941 Mercury DImes
The obverse of the coin features a profile of Mercury, the Roman god of commerce, while the reverse depicts a fasces, an ancient symbol of authority, wrapped by an olive branch representing peace. The coin was designed by Adolph Alexander Weinman, who may have used Elsie Stevens, the wife of poet and lawyer Wallace Stevens, as a model for the young Liberty on the obverse.

1941 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
The coin features Adolph A. Weinman's classic "Walking Liberty" design, which is considered one of the most beautiful coin designs in American history. The U.S. Mint even used this design for its American Silver Eagle bullion coin in 1986.

2
1943 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
The coin depicts a full-length figure of Liberty walking towards the rising sun, and was minted during World War II. Many 1943 half dollars have obverse doubling, which may be due to a doubled working hub or master die. However, NGC does not acknowledge this doubling because it is so common.

3
1942 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
  • The Philadelphia Mint nearly doubled its half dollar output in 1942 compared to the previous year, reflecting the increased economic activity during the first full year of the US's participation in World War II.
