Jo Ann Ross was born in Minneapolis, MN and attended the University of Minnesota. She moved to California in the sixties and studied at the Otis Parson Art Institute in Los Angeles. She also studied with Charles White and took several private classes throughout the years. She started sketching portraits of people when she was a teenager. She studied the old masters style of painting in mixing colors. Her first works of oil on canvas were portraits of people and still lifes. After mastering realistic paintings, Jo Ann started to play around with abstract art and was influenced by Picasso, Braque, and the early cubists. Combining realistic and abstract forms, her art became figure representation. Her interest was in the combining of colors and forms to create an emotional, interesting, piece of art which was simple yet complex. After moving to Los Angeles she studied live figure drawing with live models and then started doing portraits of people on a commission basis. The Los Angeles City Courthouse hired her to do a portrait of Martin Luther King Jr. which hung there for about a year and then was transferred to a church. At a luncheon with Coretta King and then mayor of Los Angeles Ross was honored for this work. Ross has had shows in Minnesota, New York, Arizona and Los Angeles. Jo Ann has done several TV interviews on her art works. The Las Vegas art museum has sold many of her paintings. Her work is in corporate and private collections throughout the United States. She has completed a large amount of commissioned artwork.
