PulpFest is the summertime convention for fans of popular culture both old and new. This longtime event seeks to honor the pulps by drawing attention to the many ways these throwaway magazines of the early 20th century have inspired writers, artists, film directors, game designers, and other creators over the years.
PulpFest will be offering 185 lots of pulps, digest magazines, men’s adventure and true crime magazines, plus a selection of joke and gag books and other material from the collection of the late Carl Joecks at this year's convention. The PulpFest 2020 auction will begin at 9 PM on Saturday, August 8.
A retired television cameraman, electronic equipment repairman, and carpenter from Vermont, Carl Joecks became enamored with science fiction, comic books, radio, and astronomy during his youth. He was soon collecting the things that he loved.
Acquired over many years, Carl stored his collection in a darkened room. Most of his magazines were bagged with backing boards and stored flat for additional protection.
In addition to the items mentioned above, the auction will include the 1935 Pleasure Books edition of THE POP-UP BUCK ROGERS and a number of “Ace Doubles,” one of them being the very first double paperback issued by the company. Also featured will be a small number of rare gangster and detective pulps, the 1942 Random House edition of George Lowther's THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, an RKO Distributing Licensing Agreement, dated Nov. 30, 1932, for a showing of KING KONG, a number of "Spicy" and war pulps, and the true first edition of Charles Willeford's first novel, HIGH PRIEST OF CALIFORNIA (published by Royal Books in the "double" format). Longtime auctioneer Joseph F. Saine of Rossford, Ohio will be managing the auction. PulpFest 2020 will also be saluting the centennial of author Ray Bradbury’s birth; the 100th anniversary of BLACK MASK — the pulp where the hardboiled detective story took root; and the 120th anniversary of the birth of WEIRD TALES artist Margaret Brundage. “Bradbury, BLACK MASK, and Brundage” have inspired and continue to inspire creators the world over.
