There are three huge barns full!
The auction will have two rings starting at 10:00 am in building D
Ring one: Books and related - The more valuable titles sold individually and many in quality lots, showcases and book shelves/cabinets.
Ring two: Antiques, Collectibles, Pop Culture, Games, Comics, Records, etc.
Buyers will have the opportunity to "pick" boxes in building C and G to be brought to the book ring.
If you like books, have a friend who like books, has a relative that needs books.... You get the picture, bring them to the auction. Bring a trailer, maybe two!
After the two rings, we will start the book crawl! Books will be sold by the box and in larger groups
We have always been much more than a bookstore. Kaleidoscope Books & Collectibles is often compared to The Never Ending Story, a fantastic array of everything your mother and/or your father made you throw away. Of course, we have 1000s of first edition fiction, science fiction, mystery, and children’s books. Certainly, we have art, design and theatre books. Sure, we have books for purely ornamental value, their beauty reflected in their bindings, printing, and interiors. Some are complete sets of decorative books. Yes, we have a general stock of science, history, nature, and automobile books.
We also have a large collection of 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th Century antiquarian books in all subjects, as well as the largest collection of juvenile fiction in Michigan, including Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames, Tom Swift, Chip Hilton, and many obscure series titles from the 1850s to the 1970s. Did I forget to mention all the Golden Books, Caldecott and Newberry winners, or science fiction Hugo and Nebula winners? If that’s not enough, we have hundreds of vintage maps, platt, and geography books.
We have a strong section of music books from rock to jazz to country to blues and classical. Other sections include travel books, African American culture, Judaica, religion, and philosophy. We have vintage bibles, books on Native American culture and western Americana and a fine selection of books about University of Michigan athletics—football, baseball, hockey and more.
If you’re looking for more, add a collection of vintage pulp fiction with lurid, yet tasteful, covers that sometimes make us blush. We have hundreds of playbills dating back to the 1930s through the 1970s to match a fine selection of plays.
And Playboys, yes, with the centerfolds intact, from the 1950s through the 1990s, along with magazines galore, from Andy Warhol’s Interview to Esquire, Fortune, Time, Life, Look, Ms, Mother Jones, Travel, Asia and too many oddities to list here. And political pamphlets and pins, cookbooks and pamphlets spanning a full century fromthe1880s, forward. Did I mention four large storage lockers filled with stock not looked at in 26 years?
Let’s not forget 1000s of prints dating back to the 17th Century, 10,000 postcards, including more than 1,000 from Michigan, sports cards, non-sports cards, Mork and Mindy, Star Trek, Star Wars and auto-related cards. And of course rock memorabilia in original posters and handbills…Grateful Dead, Joplin, Jefferson Airplane. Did I mention the 100s of original Valentines, birthday greeting cards, and a large collection of vintage (happy and stern) Santas from the 1880s to the 1960s.
And that’s just the books and ephemera.
For the child in all of us, we have a collection of vintage toy cars from the 1920s through the 1980s, including some wind-ups and Japanese tins, a Star Wars bicycle. Really! The stock includes a 19th Century large-format Ziegler stereoscope, a modern combination stereo/TV from1960, a few TVs, tape decks and miscellaneous electronics from the 1940s through the 1960s. A variety of framed posters, including two large format Star Trek prints of exceptional beauty. And who wouldn’t need a 1940s Ouija board still inbox? And so much more that I’m getting writer’s cramp. The last item for sale will be one of Kaleidoscope’s iconic signs.
To present this pretty amazing collection, we acquired a distinctive array of display pieces—beautiful artisan-crafted bookcases hand hewn to house much of this collection. Also for sale are a variety of notable antique showcases, including a 19th Century baker’s top case in dome glass housed atop a 19th Century oak showcase, an 1840 rosewood glass showcase nearly 7 feet long, and an equally long ink and pen display case from 1900; three 20th century moderne cases, 1950s cases and two other 19th Century cases are all for sale, plus a few small table-top showcases.
And finally, after 26+ years of joyfully serving our community, I say farewell to my beloved retail business. I thank you all for your devoted patronage and hope you enjoy the auction.
